How to drive

 

FUEL TYPE:

MOST RENTAL CARS USE UNLEADED PETROL. THERE IS GENERALLY ONLY ONE ULEADED GRADE AVAILABLE IN IRELAND. SOME SPECIAL EQUIPMENT VEHICLES MAY BE DIESEL, AND THIS WILL BE ADVISED ON RENTAL.

 

FUEL COST:

PETROL PRICES IN IRELAND VARY, BUT ARE BELOW EUROPEN AVERAGE PRICES. MOST CARS USE SMALL ENGINES WITH LOW FUEL CONSUMPTION, AND DRIVING DISTANCES IN IRELAND ARE LOW.

 

SEAT BELTS:

ALL OCUPANTS MUST WEAR SEAT BELTS OR RESTRAINTS (FOR CHILDREN). CHILDREN UNDER 12 YEARS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN FRONT SEATS. INFANTS AND YOUNG CHILDEN MUST BE SECURED IN RESTRAINTS. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE DRIVER TO ENSURE THAT THESE SAFETY RULES ARE ENFORCED.

 

LUGGAGE AND PARKING:

DO NOT LEAVE LUGGAGE VISABLE AS IT WILL BE STOLEN AND CUSTOMER WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR GLASS BREAKAGE AND LOCK DAMAGE. PLACE LUGGAGE IN THE BOOT (TRUNK) BEFORE PARKING. DO NOT LEAVE CAR OVERNIGHT ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, ALWAYS PARK THE CAR IN A SECURE CAR PARK. .

 

GEOGRAPHIC DRIVING LIMITATIONS:

COUNTY RENTAL CARS MAY BE DRIVEN IN THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND AND IN NORTHERN IRELAND WITH PRIOR APPROVAL. COUNTY RENTAL CARS MAY NOT BE TAKEN OUT OF THE ISLAND OF IRELAND.

AS A GENERAL RULE THE FOLLOWING SPEED LIMITS APPLY, HOWEVER WATCH SIGNS FOR CHANGES IN SPEED LIMITS

OPEN ROAD 62MPH / 100KPH

MOTORWAYS 75MPH / 120KPH

 

DRIVING AT ROUNDABOUTS

GIVE WAY TO TRAFFIC ALREADY ON A ROUNDABOUT. ENTER ROUNDABOUTS BY TURNING LEFT AND DRIVING IN A CLOCKWISE DIRECTION. REMAIN IN THE RIGHT HAND LANE IN THE ROUNDABOUT. BEFORE YOUR EXIT SIGNAL LEFT, AND GIVE WAY TO PASSING TRAFFIC, BEFORE CHANGING LANES OR EXITING ROUNDABOUT.

 

JUNCTIONS:

OBEY THE SIGNS. WHERE THERE IS NO SIGN, EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION, AND ALSO GIVE WAY TO TRAFFIC COMING FROM YOUR RIGHT.

 

PEDESTRIAN LIGHTS:

A FLASHING AMBER LIGHT MEANS THAT YOU MUST YIELD TO PEDESTRAIANS WHO WISH TO CROSS THE ROAD. PROCEED WITH CAUTION IF THE CROSSING IS CLEAR.
